17. That is the number of sets the Hawks have won in a row spanning eight games to a 3-1 road victory over the Wilton Beavers.

The Hawks most recent victim: the Tipton Tigers who fell 3-0 on their home court to countless volleys, powerfully sprung from Mid-Prairie’s young outside hitters.

Prior to the game, junior Dakota Mitchell announced via X – Twitter - her verbal commitment to the University of North Texas to continue her volleyball career.

Mitchell’s leadership is instrumental for the team as they sit ranked No. 6 in the state of Iowa at 3A. Mitchell is ranked fourth in digs (341) and serve aces (42) at 3A.

The Golden Hawks toppled the Tipton Tigers in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-22 on Thursday, Sept. 28.

“We’re excited about it. Just locked down another conference match, so that was good,” head coach Sherry Evans said. “We’re running a fast pace. We’ve got all great hitters up in the front row so you can’t just keep on one player because we do such a good job moving the ball around.”

Both sets one and two ended with Tipton faults. Set three concluded with a spike from junior Brylee Gearhart between the defense and glancing the boundary line for a finishing kill.

A path for sophomore Laurin Fay opened in the starting lineup after an injury. This would be Fay’s first varsity action and she seized the moment.

Fay was first in serve aces (3), tied for first with blocks (3), assists (2), and tied for second with kills (7).

“Kudos to Laurin Fay. She came in here and played lights out,” Evans said. “I was very proud of her.”

Mitchell continued to collect the digs, ranking 18. Sophomore Jovi Evans led in kills (8). Junior Callie Huber tied Fay for most blocks at three.

Sophomore Katelyn Harland spent a good portion of her night at the serving boundary, finishing with two serve aces and a 93.3% serving efficiency. Only Pacha and Evans finished with better efficiency, both sophomores finishing with 100%.

The Hawks played at the New London Tournament over the weekend.

Next, they’ll host Regina Catholic on Thursday, Oct. 5, travel for the Clear Creek Amana Tournament on Oct. 7 and host the RVC South Conference Tournament on Oct. 9.
