The scorching heat of a late September day didn’t slow Mid-Prairie senior Danielle Hostetler at Wartburg College.

Neither did the fast-running competition.

Hostetler, who will go after a fourth consecutive state championship Oct. 28, posted her best time of the season Sept. 30 and won the Dan Huston Invite, a large meet featuring runners from schools in larger classes.

“She ran great,” Mid-Prairie coach Jeremy Meyers said. “It was nice for her to have some good competition. It was fun for us to watch her have somebody to chase.”

Hostetler finished the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 46.7 seconds, defeating Waterloo West freshman Nakia Olivierre by 2.1 seconds.

Hostetler’s time was the second best this season in Class 2A and the 12th best in all classes. Keelee Leitzen of Dubuque Hempstead, who has the best time in 4A, finished fourth and nearly a minute behind Hostetler.

The heat was pushing 90 degrees by the noon start.

“It was pretty warm,” Hostetler said. “When it’s like that, I remember it’s the same thing for everyone else.”

Hostetler’s win and a 36th-place finish by Phoebe Shetler helped the Golden Hawk girls finish third in the team competition.

Shetler had a time of 21:08.7.

“I’m really happy for her,” Meyers said. “Phoebe was phenomenal today.”

Annika Poll and Greta Sieren finished 53rd and 54th, respectively.

Emmett Swartzentruber led the Mid-Prairie boys with a personal-best time of 16:31, finishing 25th.

Preston Yutzy was 76th with a time of 17:20.7.

The meet was the final preparation for the Golden Hawks prior to the River Valley Conference championship meet, set for Oct. 10 at the Kickers Soccer Complex in Iowa City.
