Area high school students are needed to participate in the Optimist International Essay contest with an opportunity to win a $500 scholarship locally.
The theme for this year’s Essay contest is “Discovering the Optimism within Me” according to Kalona Optimist Essay Contest chair Wendy Smith.
The deadline to enter is February 10, 2023.
First place at the district or state level is a $2,500 scholarship, second place is a $1,500 scholarship and third place is a $1,000 scholarship. The Essay Contest is open to contestants under the age of 19 as of October 1, 2022. There is no minimum age.

At the Optimist International level, the Essay winners receive a $15,000 scholarship for first; $10,000 scholarship for second and $5,000 scholarship for third, Smith pointed out.
